What is Pearl Comments?
Pearl Comments is a software system
for teams that create and manage web sites. It allows people to
easily attach comments to any web page (Intranet or Internet).
Comments are created and viewed in context (while viewing the page in a
web browser), which eliminates the loss of context frequently experienced
when communicating via email, IM or telephone. Everyone who uses
Pearl Comments can see and respond to each other's comments.
Benefits
Teams that use Pearl Comments:
- Save time and reduce costs due to shorter design and review
cycles and less communication overhead.
- Experience a more effective process because
participants can see and respond to each other's feedback.
- Never lose track of an issue. Comments are stored in
a network accessible database where they will not be lost in someone's
email inbox.
- Produce higher quality results because people can easily
report problems or make suggestions on specific pages.
For any team that creates and manages web sites, these benefits result
in a streamlined process.
For web design companies, these benefits also result in improved client
satisfaction which leads to improved client retention.
Usage Scenario
During the web site design and development process,
information architects, designers, programmers, and project managers
can all use Pearl Comments to collaborate. For example, if the
project manager notices that some text on a page needs to be revised,
he can simply select the text that is in error and add a
comment.
When the designer sees the comment she will know exactly which page
element needs to be corrected.
Once the site has been placed on a staging server, employees of the
client can use Pearl Comments to critique the staged site and
collaborate with the web design team. Comments are stored in a
database so that everyone can see and act on them rather than being
lost in one person's email inbox or mistaken for spam.
Key Features
- Comments may be attached to any web page or to a particular
word or paragraph.
- A topic is associated with each comment (e.g., "broken
link").
- Comments may be plain text or formatted text, and may
contain links to other pages.
- Filtered views allow people to easily see comments for a
particular page, comments made by a particular person, comments that have
a particular topic, or comments made recently.
- A status of "In Progress", "Completed", or "Closed" may be
assigned to each comment. Comments marked "Closed" are hidden by default.
- Comments are visible to other people as soon as they are
made — no more frustrating email delays.
- Creation and viewing of comments may be restricted based on
identity and project (i.e., one client cannot see another client's
comments).
- Viewing, creating, and deleting of comments is done within
the context of the web page using the Pearl Comments Browser Extension,
which adds a sidebar to popular web browsers such as Mozilla Firefox
and Microsoft® Internet Explorer.
- All comments are stored and retrieved via the Pearl
Comments Server, which uses an off-the-shelf relational database for
fast, robust storage.
- Common administrative tasks may be accomplished using a
web-based interface.
- The Pearl Comments system uses standard XML and HTTP
protocols.
- Comments may be exported and imported as XML and may be
accessed using Atom 1.0 compliant readers.
- Email notification allows people to receive information
about new and updated comments.
